Family therapy can help family members improve communication and resolve conflict, enabling them to share and examine difficult thoughts and emotions safely and together. This form of therapy is ideal for all family groups who need support in understanding each other’s experiences and views. Additionally, methods like couples therapy and dyadic therapy can enhance relationship dynamics, while individual therapy can address personal challenges. For families with younger members, play therapy offers a unique approach to engage children in the therapeutic process, highlighting how the health of relationships between family members informs the overall functioning of the family.
Dyadic Therapy
In Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), the therapist assists family members in developing healthy patterns of relating and communicating, ensuring that everyone feels safe and connected. This specialized dyadic therapy is attachment-focused and designed to treat children and adolescents who have experienced developmental trauma, insecure attachment, and emotional regulation issues stemming from abuse and neglect.
Through this process, children can be supported in integrating the effects of trauma and loss, enhancing their ability to regulate emotional states, improving reflective functioning, and socializing with adults and peers. DDP is suitable for parents or carers with children in care, and it complements other therapeutic approaches, such as individual therapy and play therapy, to promote overall well-being.
Couples therapy, a form of dyadic therapy, assists partners in enhancing communication, resolving conflicts, rebuilding trust, and strengthening emotional bonds. It provides valuable tools for better understanding each other, navigating challenges, and fostering healthier interaction patterns for a more satisfying relationship. This approach can even help manage separation constructively when necessary.
Utilizing principles from emotion-focused therapy (EFT) and the Gottman method, couples are guided in breaking negative cycles, increasing empathy, and gaining new perspectives. These strategies lead to greater appreciation, respect, and intimacy, making couples therapy an essential resource for many. In addition to couples therapy, individuals may also benefit from individual therapy or even play therapy, depending on their unique needs.
Individual therapy for children, adolescents, or adults can be provided directly or in conjunction with other therapies, such as dyadic therapy or couples therapy. Individual therapy utilizes several Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS), including EMDR (see more), cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, relaxation strategies, psycho-education, and skills training. Additionally, play therapy may also be integrated to support the therapeutic process.
Play Therapy
Play is a powerful teacher for all of life, especially in early development. Play therapy is an evidence-based, developmentally appropriate counseling method for children (typically ages 3–12, but can be utilized at all stages of life) that uses play as a natural language to express, explore, and resolve emotional, social, and behavioral problems. This aligns with the principles of individual therapy, as it focuses on personal expression and healing.
Traditional play therapy employs toys, art, and games to help children process trauma, reduce anxiety, and improve communication in a safe, therapeutic environment. It can be particularly beneficial when combined with approaches like couples therapy or dyadic therapy, which emphasize relational dynamics and support.
We offer Theraplay® (see more), which is a parent-child therapy that can be instrumental when trauma has occurred. In these cases, play can serve as an excellent tool to support regulation and relationship repair.
